Every punishment took place according to a precise ritual. The boy or girl had to wait for the designated family member to punish them with their back already exposed, preferably in a position suitable for receiving the punishment. Often, to increase the effect of the punishment, it was administered by a brother or cousin of the opposite sex, adding further humiliation to the experience.

Needless to say, assigning the task to someone “of punishment age” did not make it any less effective. The punisher knew very well that if the punishment was not deemed adequate, the roles would be reversed.
