The Slave Merchant

In Republican Rome, slaves were very common; every household had several, assigned to various tasks. However, when a matron needed a young slave for her equally young daughter, there was only one merchant to go to. She sold only slaves, and only young and beautiful ones. These slaves were trained for months to provide young Roman patrician women with the kind of company that kept them away from the temptation and danger of not remaining virgins until marriage.
